Hyderabad is set to emerge as India’s first and largest global knowledge hub with several leading universities from the UK and the US exploring offshore campuses, executive education programmes, research centres and specialised courses in the city, according to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
The CM reviewed the outcome of his visit to UK along with IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu and later the US tour of senior officials on Monday.
Officials said the University of London, a federation of 17 independent institutions, and Northeastern University, Boston, are set to establish their first offshore campuses in India in Hyderabad.
The London School of Economics and the School of Oriental and African Studies have agreed to send teams to Telangana to explore offshore schools, course offerings, industry interaction, new pedagogical models and classroom-based programmes. Their faculty members could also be stationed in Hyderabad.
Harvard University has expressed intent to introduce short-term executive education programmes for senior government and corporate professionals at the Dr MCR HRD Institute in Hyderabad.
Virginia Tech is expected to bring industry-aligned and future-ready learning frameworks to Telangana. Oxford University, meanwhile, will explore the possibility of establishing shared research centres and centres of excellence in the State.
The delegation also held discussions with representatives and senior faculty from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, London Business School, Cambridge University and Imperial College London.
The Chief Minister said his government would bring the best educational offerings to the youth and children of Telangana. The initiative would build on Hyderabad’s existing strengths in software, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, manufacturing, defence and aerospace.
Dr MCR HRD Institute vice-chairperson Santhi Kumari said the State is redesigning classrooms at the institute to facilitate world-class education programmes.
Chief Minister’s adviser and former Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao said the global knowledge hub would initially be developed through facilities at the MCR-HRD Institute and, subsequently, at Bharat Future City.
