Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday (October 10, 2026) said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar would go, and so would the Modi government, and that the repair of democracy would then begin.

In a post in Hindi on X, Mr. Gandhi said, “Gyanesh Kumar will go. This government will go. Then the repair of democracy will begin.” He also tagged, on X, a video clip of his speech to INDIA bloc MPs at the Central Hall of Parliament.

यह सरकार जाएगी।

Mr. Gandhi had, on Friday (October 9, 2026), said there was a “much deeper problem” than CEC Kumar, and that it required the termination of the current government, asserting that if the Opposition continued to push the way it had over the past few days, the government would fall.

Opposition protests had shaken the foundations of the government, which was now scared, Mr. Gandhi had told INDIA bloc MPs at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan.

“There is a much deeper problem than Gyanesh Kumar, and it requires termination of this current government,” the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha had said. This was something worth fighting for and dying for, he had said. “If we continue to push the way we have in the last three-four days, I guarantee this government will fall,” the former Congress president had said.

The Opposition’s aggressive push comes days after a report by The Indian Express said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had objected on record at least 14 times over 10 months, mostly to decisions and orders related to the SIR of electoral rolls.

Under fire over the objections raised by two of its Commissioners, the Election Commission has asserted that differing views and observations are a normal part of deliberations in any institution, and that all its orders carry full legal sanction and follow established statutory procedures.

Meanwhile, Congress leader K.C. Venugopal, in a post on X, said, “The Modi-Shah regime has officially waged war against its own people”.

All trains shut, 57 metro stations shut, mass detentions, Delhi in lockdown, CRPF deployment.

The Modi-Shah regime has officially waged war against its own people.

A completely non-violent protest, a Satyagraha against the illegitimate dictators, is being clamped down upon in the most brutal and oppressive fashion.

RIP Indian democracy (1947 – 2026) 🙏

“A completely non-violent protest, a Satyagraha against the illegitimate dictators, is being clamped down upon in the most brutal and oppressive fashion,” he added.
