CHANDIGARH

The Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib set an ideal of bravery during his struggles with the Mughals, and remained steadfast in refusing to compromise on his faith and principles, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday (November 25, 2025).

He was addressing an event commemorating the 350th Shaheedi Diwas of Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur at Kurukshetra in Haryana.

“Personalities like Guru Tegh Bahadur ji are rare in history, and his life, sacrifice, and character remain a great source of inspiration… Guru Sahib did not abandon the path of dharma and, in a state of deep meditation, sacrificed his head in defence of his faith,” he said.

Supreme sacrifice

The Prime Minister noted that India today embodies the sacrifice and dedication of epochal figures like Guru Sahib. “It is because of this supreme sacrifice that Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib is revered as Hind Di Chadar.”

Speaking of another infamous incident, the PM said, the cruelty of the Mughals was witnessed in their executions of the brave Sahibzadas — Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh — the sons of Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. They were bricked alive but did not abandon their duty or the path of faith.

Mr. Modi said that Guru Sahib also taught us that we should neither frighten anyone nor live in fear of anyone. “While India desires peace, it never compromises on its security, with Operation Sindoor being the greatest example,” he said.

Highlighting the issue of drugs, Mr. Modi said addiction is a huge challenge amongst the young. The Prime Minister stated that the government is making every effort to eradicate this problem from its roots, but emphasised that it is also a battle for society and families.
