Guntur AMC tightens chilli quality checks after China rejects a few containers

Following reports of China rejecting a handful of chilli containers from India, the Agriculture Market Committee (AMC) in Guntur, the largest chilli market yard in South Asia, has initiated measures to strengthen quality control and promote pesticide residue-free production. The AMC held a meeting with exporters on Friday.

Speaking to The Hindu after the meeting, AMC Chairman Kurra Appa Rao said exporters from the region ship lakhs of tonnes of chillies to China every year and that exports have continued unhindered despite recent concerns over pesticide residues. He clarified that only three consignments were flagged for residue issues and that the development had not affected subsequent shipments. The companies whose containers were rejected were allowed to resume exports after complying with the required norms.

“A few container rejections are not a major concern in global trade. Similar instances occur with different products across countries,” Mr. Appa Rao said.

Exporters and officials discussed measures to improve export quality standards and explore new international markets. The chairman noted that excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides was making it harder for farmers to meet the quality requirements prescribed by importing countries, including China.

With opportunities to expand exports to new markets, he urged farmers to reduce chemical usage and focus on producing high-quality chillies.

Mr. Appa Rao said special awareness programmes would be organised in association with agricultural scientists to educate farmers on residue reduction techniques, export-oriented cultivation practices and international quality standards.

He also assured exporters that the suggestions and concerns raised at the meeting would be brought to the government’s attention for necessary action.

Farmers, exporters and officials have agreed to hold monthly review meetings to strengthen chilli exports, enhance the global reputation of Guntur chillies and improve returns to farmers.
