With about 20% of the estimated households still to be covered across the State, the Social and Educational Survey of the State’s population being conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, has been extended till October 24 in the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) region and till October 12 in rest of the State.
To accommodate the teachers to complete the survey, school timings have been revised. as the schools are set to reopen on Wednesday (October 8) after Dasara holidays.
While the survey commenced in rest of the State on September 22, it started in the GBA region from October 4. The commission is conducting a survey on the social and educational conditions of citizens of the State through digital mode. The survey was scheduled to end on Tuesday.
An order issued here on Monday by Suralkar Vikas Kishor, Commissioner of Public Instruction, asked government and aided schools in the GBA region to conduct classes from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. between October 8 and 24.
In other parts of the State (except GBA), government and aided schools have been instructed to conduct classes from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from October 8 to 12. The teachers assigned for the survey in the subsequent period have been instructed to conduct the survey.
The survey has been instructed to be conducted even during holidays and completed by the end of October 24 in the GBA region and by October 12 in other parts of the State.
The government has appointed around 1.8 lakh teachers as enumerators for the survey and each teacher has been assigned about 90 to 150 houses.
Earlier, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa had told reporters in Mangaluru that a decision would be made that would not affect teaching.
Challenges
Meanwhile, on Monday, enumerators struggled to complete the survey since the commission made available Unique Household ID (UHID) numbers of all houses in each ward, causing confusion and struggle to find the houses.
“The UHID numbers of the houses in our ward have been made available to all enumerators, resulting in houses allotted to us being surveyed by others. I was allotted a total of 100 houses. Out of them, 60 houses have been completed and 40 houses were pending. But since the UHID numbers have been made available to everyone, the 30 houses allotted to me have been surveyed by others. However, my login shows that 40 houses are pending for the survey. So it is a challenge to find the pending houses,” said an enumerator from Ramanagara in Bengaluru South District.
