The government has decided to upgrade and develop 1,000 government schools as Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) in the next two years with the help of Community and Corporate Social Responsibility (CCSR) fund.

The schools will be developed in gram panchayats, urban local bodies and Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) areas which do not have KPS schools so far. The government has also allowed the contributors/donor organisations to co-brand their organisation with the name of the schools they establish and support.

The government has released guidelines and announced Karnataka State CCSR Monitoring Committee, School Education CCSR Cell and District/GBA level CCSR cells.

The Karnataka State CCSR Monitoring Committee is headed by the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister will be the vice-chairman. The members will be ministers and senior officers.

The School Education CCSR Cell is chaired by the Departmental Commissioner, the District CCSR Cell is chaired by the District Collector and the GBA CCSR Cell is chaired by the GBA Chief Commissioner.

At present, 325 KPS schools are functioning across the State. In the current academic year, the State government has taken steps to develop 500 KPS clusters with the assistance of about ₹2,000 crore from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

There are about four million students studying in government schools and pre-university colleges (Class 1 to 12) in Karnataka. The Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) has taken steps to improve the quality of learning.

Each KPS school provides education to about 1,200 students from 8 to 15 villages. These schools provide education in Kannada and English bilingual medium from Pre-school to Class 12 with emphasis on computer education, skill education in industry-related curriculum, special classes for competitive examinations.

The government aims to establish one KPS school in every Gram Panchayat across the State, and provide free school transport facility to reach these schools.

In this context, the State government has decided to enhance partnership with CCSR contributions and scale up KPS schools across the State.

In the financial year 2024-25, an estimated more than ₹352 crore CCSR contributions have been disbursed across the State through various initiatives including infrastructure development, training of teachers and provision of digital education support.
