Following directives by the Supreme Court about removal of stray dogs from institutional premises, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has commenced a ‘Street dog removal drive’ in government hospitals.

The highest court in its recent order has made local bodies responsible for removal of stray dogs from public premises such as educational institutions, hospitals, sports complexes and transport hubs.

On the first day of the operation, a total of 277 stray dogs were caught and shifted to the GHMC Animal Care Centres for proper care, sterilisation, vaccination and management.

GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan said the civic body has enough shelters for now, and is set to establish new kennels if need be. The corporation, through its veterinary wing, is also organising puppy adoption drives which will continue in future, he said while talking to The Hindu.

After the government hospitals, the operation will be extended to other identified public places, including schools, colleges and others in accordance with the SC order, a statement from GHMC said.
