A gardener who sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl in a colony park last December has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The accused has also been found responsible for targeting another child.

The verdict, delivered by the XII Additional Sessions Court in Nampally, ordered rigorous imprisonment for life, meaning the convict will remain in jail for the rest of his natural life.

The accused, Gowtham Rajbangshi, 44, a gardener in Bowenpally, took the seven-year-old to a secluded spot in the park on December 3 and sexually assaulted her.

The incident came to light only when the child informed her mother on December 11, prompting her father to approach the police. During the investigation, officers found that a nine-year-old girl had also been assaulted by him.

The Karkhana Police arrested him soon after the case was registered, and investigators collected scientific, medical and documentary evidence before filing a detailed chargesheet. The prosecution argued the case under the relevant provisions of the POCSO Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The judgment was delivered by Judge T. Anitha, who convicted him after detailed trial proceedings.
