The railway police on Thursday (August 13, 2026) arrested an absconding terrorist after “35 years”. He is wanted for a 1991 bomb blast, which left three dead. Police identified the accused as Altaf Hussain Sheikh, a resident of Marhama, Bijbehara, Anantnag, in south Kashmir.

“The accused went underground and lived under a concealed identity for several decades,” police said.

The police said the accused, along with accomplices was involved in a bomb blast on April 2, 1991, at platform number 1 of Jammu railway station. The incident left three persons, including two paramilitary personnel, dead and 18 civilians injured.

“During the investigation, an accused named Mr. Khan was arrested, while three other accused escaped and could not be arrested at that time and were declared absconders by the concerned court,” the police said.

Over the last two years, the railway police launched an intensive manhunt and identified another accused and “verified his identity by going into the minute details of his identity and residential particulars”.

The police said it was discovered that the accused was living under a concealed identity and had established himself as a successful businessman in the Bijbehara area.

“This long pursuit bore fruit and the accused was arrested and produced before the TADA Court on 13th August 2026,” the police added.
