The State government will build the Kittur Channamma Freedom Park in the Kittur Fort in Belagavi district at a cost of ₹40 crore, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said on Sunday.

The State government will also accord financial approval for the Channavrushabhendra Irrigation Project estimated to cost ₹520 crore as it will benefit the Kittur region, he said at the valedictory function of Kittur Utsav.

“Local leaders and legislators have proposed the creation of a Freedom Park to serve as a visual narrative within the fort premises. It will have sound and light show and hi-tech installations to showcase the historical significance of the royal house of Kittur. Funds for the construction of this Freedom Park will be allocated in the upcoming budget. A formal Government Order regarding this will be issued immediately,” he said.

In the near future, the North-West Road Transport Corporation will be renamed as the Kittur Rani Channamma Road Transport Corporation, the Chief Minister said.

He praised the valour and spirit of Kittur Rani Channamma who led a valiant fight against the British East India Company in 1824 and won the battle of Kittur.

“Her courage is not merely a matter of history, it serves as a lesson in self-respect for the future generations. Her heroic deeds are an inspiration to us all. Her sacrifice is immortal,” he said.

“The legacy of self-respect, valour and courage embodied by Kittur Rani Channamma continues in this land. May Kittur Channamma serve as an inspiration for everyone,” he said.

He said that the State government will take steps to see that the Vijaya Jyoti of Kittur serves as a beacon for the development of the region and its people.

“The people have entrusted us with power. We will make an honest effort to repay this debt. We have started the Praja Seve department to reach people on their doorsteps and resolve their grievances locally,” he said.
