“Four workers were killed and six others injured after a lift collapsed from a height at a power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district,” the police said on Wednesday (October 8, 2025).

Among the injured, four are critical and the remaining two are critical but stable according to Sakti Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma.

Ms. Sharma told The Hindu that the accident happened at RKM Powergen Private Limited’s plant in Dabhra area of Ucchpinda village on Tuesday night (October 7, 2025) when the ten victims were descending in an industrial lift.

“When they were 40 ft above the ground when the lift crashed and hit the ground. We reached the spot and took them to Jindal Fortis Hospital in neighbouring Raigarh district. Till Wednesday morning (October 8, 2025), four had succumbed to their injuries and the remaining remain hospitalised,” she said.

The police were in the process of registering an FIR, she added. “We will try to record the statements of the survivors till they are medically fit. We have also called an industrial inspector to conduct a safety audit on what was the negligence,” Ms. Sharma said.

It is learnt that the capacity of the lift was around 2,000 kg and its maintenance work was carried out recently.

This is the second industrial accident in Chhattisgarh in less than a fortnight. On September 26, 2025, a structure collapsed on the premises of Godavari Power and Ispat Limited in which six staff members were killed and as many were injured.
