Forensic scientist and former Director of the Andhra Pradesh Forensic Science Laboratory in the undivided State K.P.C. Gandhi on Friday expressed profound grief over the death of H.J. Dora, former DGP in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Gandhi, who is the honorary Advisor (Forensic Sciences) to the Government of Andhra Pradesh now, recalled Dora’s valuable services. “During his tenure, forensic science gained significant prominence and importance,” he said adding that with his active support, along with that of a few others, the CLUES (Crime Laboratory Ultimate Evidence System) were formed. The CLUES teams were specialised forensic units designed to improve crime detection and conviction rates by providing on-the-spot scientific investigation at crime scenes. In addition, nine regional forensic laboratories were set up across all police ranges in the composite Andhra Pradesh, he recounted.

Mr. Gandhi said Dora realised there was a strong need to recruit forensic experts to strengthen the system, but the government had imposed a ban on recruitment. “Taking a bold step, Dora decided to surrender 150 Police Constable posts in order to create 50 positions for forensic experts in the forensic laboratory, which had already built a notable reputation,” he said, adding that the former DGP had also extended wholehearted support to promote and popularise forensic science.
