Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian on Wednesday said 1,000 nurses working on a contractual basis would be regularised in the first phase, and the regularisation of the remaining nurses would be carried out in a phased manner.
The Minister’s announcement came after he held talks with the representatives of protesting nurses’ associations on Wednesday.
Contract nurses appointed through the Medical Services Recruitment Board have been staging continuous protests demanding the regularisation of their services. Earlier, he had held two rounds of talks with them on December 19 and 22.
In view of appointing the nurses currently employed on a contractual basis to regular posts, the State government would effect pending promotions and create new posts. Following this, more than 1,000 contract nurses would be appointed to permanent posts, he said.
He added that the State government was taking measures for the welfare of nurses employed on contractual basis.
Steps are under way to provide paid maternity leave through the National Health Mission. A government order in this regard will be issued soon, the Minister said.
The protesting nurses have accepted the State government’s decision and decided to withdraw their protest, Mr. Subramanian added.
