Five persons were arrested in two separate incidents for stealing two-wheelers within Vellore Corporation limits on Tuesday.

Police said K. Illavarasan, 20, V. Hemanth Kumar, 23, T. Jayakumar, 24, and two juveniles were arrested in connection with the two-wheeler theft from public places in the town. Police recovered 20 vehicles from them.

Initial inquiry revealed that based on orders of A. Mayilvaganan, SP (Vellore), a police team was checking vehicles at Sathuvachari on Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH-48) when they stopped a trio in a two-wheeler. Along with the two juveniles, Illavarasan gave contradictory statements that aroused suspicion of the police. They were unable to show valid documents of the vehicle.

Initial inquiry revealed the trio were residents in Pallikonda near Vellore town. They steal two-wheelers that are parked in public places and residential areas for a long time. Stolen two-wheelers were kept near the toll gate at Pallikonda. Police recovered 18 two-wheelers from them.

In another vehicle-checking exercise in Old Town that comes under Vellore Corporation limits, the Vellore North Police team stopped Hemanth Kumar and his friend Jayakumar, who are also from Pallikonda. Police found they were riding a stolen two-wheeler. Based on an inquiry, police recovered two vehicles from the duo.

Cases were registered against them. Three persons were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. Two juveniles were sent to the government home. A probe is under way.
