Police found 850 tapentadol tablets — a potent painkiller prescribed for post-surgical pain, but often found to be abused.

Five persons involved in the illegal sale of painkiller tablets were arrested by Gudiyatham Town police at Perumbadi village here on Sunday.
Police said the arrested persons were identified as B. Ayyappan, 27, R. Naveen Kumar, 20, S. Devan, 25, G. Mohan, 23 and K. Baskaran, 22. They are residents of Gudiyatham.
On the order of Superintendent of Police (SP) A. Myilvaganan, special police teams were patrolling on the stretch when they intercepted the gang near an open plot in the village.
Police checked them and found 850 tapentadol tablets — a potent painkiller prescribed for post-surgical pain, but often found to be abused. Police also found 50 syringes. Investigations revealed the gang was selling the tablets for youth and students in the area. Police seized the tablets, syringes and a two-wheeler from them.
A case was registered under Section 123 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 8(c) read with 20(b)(ii)(A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Arrested persons were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is underway.
