A major fire broke out at the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation’s Material Collection Facility (MCF), near Kulathoor, under the Attipra zone in the early hours of Thursday (September 11, 2025).

According to information from the Kazhakuttam fire station, the blaze began around 4 a.m. from the area where plastic waste was stored in large quantities.

The MCFs are used by the civic bodies in Kerala to store the collected waste before it is transported to the various recycling facilities.

A fire engine from the Kazhakuttam station was rushed to the spot immediately, followed by three more units from Kazhakuttam and Chacka fire stations.

The Fire and Rescue Services personnel took around four hours to douse the blaze completely.

According to officials, due to the presence of residential buildings nearby, there was a risk of the fire spreading if the intervention was delayed.

A 20-member Fire and Rescue Services team led by Kazhakuttam station officer Jishad put out the blaze.
