Mumbai Police has registered an FIR against an unidentified person following a complaint by the Maharashtra BJP against a social media post by the State Congress, showing a BJP office on fire amid protests.
Maharashtra BJP Social Media Cell Coordinator Prakash Gade filed the complaint at the Marine Drive Police Station in Mumbai. The unidentified person was booked under Sections related provocation to cause riot and public mischief ( 192, 353(1) and 353(2)) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The September 28 post on X displayed a BJP office on fire during protests in Ladakh, Uttarakhand, and Bihar and referred to recent incidents in Leh demanding statehood and inclusion in Sixth Schedule inclusion. On September 24, a protest erupted in Leh, where four casualties were reported and the BJP office was attacked.
Taking to X, BJP Spokesperson Advocate Aniket Nikam replied to the post saying, “Showing in action. This is a warning for those attempting to disturb the peace of Maharashtra.”
The Maharashtra Congress post captioned the image, saying the BJP should not push people on the edge or, as the Gen Z in Leh set the BJP office on fire, the same picture will be across the entire country.
After the Leh incident, Social activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on the alleged charges that he orchestrated the violence. Congress opposed this and criticised the Centre for the arrest of Mr. Wangchuk and the violence in Leh.
The FIR was filed on Monday night. It says: “The above post has been made with the intention of creating fear among the public in a manner that will encourage them to commit crimes against the public and public peace. The post’s intention is to deliberately create riots and fear among the people in such a way that a group of people would be motivated to commit crimes against public peace.”
