A property dispute reportedly led to a shocking double death in Manjeswaram, Kasaragod, Kerala, where an 18-year-old woman was allegedly hacked to death by her father, and a close relative who was stabbed during the same incident later succumbed to his injuries on Monday evening.

The second victim, Sheik Abba (55), a native of Manjeswaram, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru. He had sustained critical stab injuries during the altercation, according to sources.

Mariyam Jumaila (18) of Thuminad in Kunhathur, was killed in the alleged attack by her father, Umar Farooq. The police said the violence erupted following a long-standing property dispute between Umar Farooq and his wife’s sister’s husband, Sheikh Abba.

According to the police, Umar Farooq first stabbed Sheikh Abba during the argument, leaving him grievously injured. He then allegedly attacked his sister-in-law with a machete. Mariyam Jumaila was hacked when she tried to intervene and stop her father from continuing the assault. She was later found in a pool of blood by neighbours who rushed to the spot on hearing her screams. Though she was taken to a hospital immediately, her life could not be saved.

Relatives and local residents alleged that Umar Farooq was a habitual drug user and frequently quarrelled with his wife. They said he had recently been forced to leave the house due to repeated domestic disputes.

Umar Farooq had returned home from abroad about three months ago and is reported to be facing several criminal cases. The couple had earlier considered divorce, but the issue was temporarily resolved following the intervention of relatives, according to sources.

The Manjeswaram police have taken Umar Farooq into custody. Mariyam Jumaila’s body has been kept at the Manjeswaram government hospital and will be handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination.
