Two people were killed after a speeding truck lost control and ran over a series of vehicles at the busy Sumanahalli junction on Saturday morning while a couple and their minor child had a narrow escape.

According to the police, the truck, heading from the industrial area, lost control due to suspected brake failure and ploughed into a bike, autorickshaw and a car at the junction.

The deceased have been identified as Yesu D., 45, an autorickshaw driver, and his daughter, Mariya Jennifer, 24, residents of Harohalli. They were reportedly heading to church as Jennifer had recently gotten engaged. Yesu’s wife was supposed to join them, but could not as she did not get off from work, the police said. Yesu and Jennifer died on the spot as the autorickshaw was mangled by the impact.

The couple who escaped the accident were travelling in a car. Vijay, a private firm employee, was driving the car with his pregnant wife and three-year-old child on board, and they were heading to the hospital for a routine check-up. He moved the car to the extreme left and escaped narrowly. The bike which was also hit by the truck was completely damaged.

The driver fled the scene following the accident. The Kamakshipalya traffic police seized the truck and registered a case of death due to negligence and rash and negligent driving against the driver.
