The day-and-night indefinite agitation by farmers seeking the release of proceeds for green gram purchased under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme, pending for six-seven months, entered the third day in Hubballi on Thursday.
The farmers have launched the indefinite agitation under the aegis of Raita Sena Karnataka in front of office of the Karnataka State Co-Operative Marketing Federation Ltd. (KSCMF) at Vikas Nagar in Hubballi.
Farmers from Byahatti, Kusugal, Sulla, Kiresur, Amaragol and other villages launched the agitation on Tuesday, while several farmers from other villages joined the protest the next day.
On Thursday, a few more joined the indefinite agitation.
The protestors have said that last year, green gram was procured from farmers at a rate of ₹8,786 per quintal. However, a month later, nearly 2,000 bags of green gram purchased from farmers at the Byahatti Procurement Centre was sent back to them. When 94 affected farmers complained, the District Task Force and the Department of Agricultural Marketing wrote to the federation directing it to release the amount to farmers.
Despite this, the farmers have not been paid till date, they said.
Chief of Raita Sena Karnataka Viresh Sobaradmath Swami, spokesperson Guru Rayanagoudra and a host of farmers leaders, who are leading the protest, have made it clear that they will continue the agitation till payment to farmers is made.
Speaking to The Hindu, Viresh Sobaradmath Swami said that they will continue the protest till all their demands are met. He said that he is in Nargund to attend the 11th anniversary of the Kalasa Banduri Nala Movement and will rejoin the protest in Hubballi on Friday.
