Factors at play in choosing the next Keralam Congress chief

Three months after coming to power in Keralam, the Congress is scouting for a new State party chief after incumbent Sunny Joseph was inducted into the Cabinet.

The choice, however, isn’t just about finding a replacement but signalling the direction the party wishes to take.

The Congress can either make a generational shift by elevating younger leaders, known for their aggressive, campaign-driven political style, or stay with veterans who have steered the organisation with a consensus-building approach.

Social equations

The party must also balance the caste and community equations that underpin its social coalition. The landslide victory of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the 2026 Assembly election was largely driven by the support of Muslim and Christian communities.

While much of the top leadership of the government and the party is from the dominant Nair community, including Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, State Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal and Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor, the Muslim community is also represented in the government, both through the Congress and its ally, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

The choice of the next State Congress chief, therefore, also has to be viewed beyond these communities to broaden the social canvas.

Among the older generation, the front-runners are 64-year-old Kodikunnil Suresh and 73-year-old Benny Behanan. 

Dalit advantage

Mr. Suresh, an eight-term MP from the reserved Mavelikkara constituency and a Congress Working Committee special invitee, is the party’s most prominent Dalit face nationally.

While Mr. Suresh offers the advantage of Dalit representation, the State Cabinet already has two Dalit Ministers—a factor that would be considered by the party high command.

Christian factor

Mr. Behanan, who represents Chalakudy in the Lok Sabha, belongs to the Jacobite Syrian Christian community, an important support base of the Congress-led UDF. 

With the BJP making a sustained effort to woo the Christian community in Keralam, the UDF government has appointed two Ministers from the community. This marks a departure from previous Congress governments, when different Christian denominations were represented in the Ministry.

The younger contenders are 49-year-old Mathew Kuzhalnadan, an MLA from Muvattupuzha, and 43-year-old Shafi Parambil, Lok Sabha member from Vatakara.

Mr. Kuzhalnadan belongs to the non-Catholic Syrian Christian community, while Mr. Parambil is from the Muslim community, a key constituency for the UDF.

Mr. Kuzhalnadan had emerged as a vocal critic of the Pinarayi Vijayan government, often taking on the former Chief Minister and his relatives over allegations of corruption.He is said to have lost out on a ministerial berth after speaking out against the IUML’s attempts to put pressure on the Congress’ chief ministerial choice.

The community equations could become particularly important if the Congress opts to retain a Christian as KPCC chief. And it could be a contest between Mr. Behanan and Mr. Kuzhalnadan, since both come from central Keralam’s Christian belt, where the BJP has made visible inroads. 

Muslim support

Mr. Parambil, on the other hand, represents a Malabar constituency with a significant Muslim electorate, where retaining the community’s support remains important for the UDF.

Both Mr. Kuzhalnadan and Mr. Parambil are said to be protégés of Mr. Venugopal.

Whichever way the party leans, the choice of the next KPCC president is likely to be read as a signal of how the Congress intends to build its social coalition in a State where it has recently reaped rich electoral dividends.
