Efforts are being made to inaugurate flight services from the Vijayapura airport by early next year, chairman of the Karnataka State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation S.G. Nanjayyananmath said in Vijayapura on Tuesday.
He told reporters that the operation of flight services has been delayed due to some technical issues, including pending approvals from the Central government.
The ₹618-crore airport has been planned to receive large aircrafts, including Airbus 320. Work on it is nearly completed. However, there has been some delay in the project due to pending clearances and also, a Supreme Court stay order which was got vacated three weeks ago.
“The State government has written to the Central government seeking environment clearance for the airport. We are also upgrading the airport to allow night landing of aeroplanes by using instrument landing systems. The tender process for these works will be completed in a week. We are also completing the pending land acquisition process for the airport,” he said.
KSIIDC is the nodal agency, while the Infrastructure Development Corporation Karnataka (IDECK) is the consultant for airport project management.
The airport will ensure connectivity not only to Vijayapura but most parts of North Karnataka, he said.
