A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) was injured after he was stabbed by a man and a woman in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh, on Friday (December 19, 2025), according to the police.

Both attackers have been arrested. Prima facie the motive behind the attack is an old dispute between the woman and the victim. The woman had registered a case of rape against the police officer in Durg district late last year, but the latter was acquitted this September, said a senior police officer.

DSP Tomesh Verma (39), posted as Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) in the Jagargunda area of neighbouring Sukma district, was attacked this afternoon when he was returning from the Dantewada district court where he had gone in connection with a case, a police officer said.

“The woman and Mr. Verma met earlier and both were in the car at the time of attack. At knife point, she forced him to stop the car outside an automobile showroom where the male accused Ramashankar Sahu, an ex-serviceman, arrived and attacked him with another knife,” said the officer.

As Sahu attempted to stab him in the neck, the knife was left stuck between his cheek and neck, another police officer said.

Mr. Verma managed to overpower Sahu and prevent further injury, following which police personnel present nearby intervened, he said.

The victim was rushed to the district hospital in Dantewada, where he was given preliminary treatment, after which he was shifted to a hospital in Jagdalpur. His condition is stated to be out of danger, a police statement said.

Ramashankar Sahu is a resident of Durg district.
