A 24-year-old student was arrested on Sunday after crashing his luxury car into another vehicle and later attempting to flee by accelerating towards a traffic constable in Gachibowli while driving under the influence of alcohol.

The accused, Gurrampati Tarun, a resident of Narsingi, was taken into custody by the Gachibowli police in connection with two separate cases registered following the incident. The white Mercedes-Benz car bearing registration number TS 07 EX 5556 was seized, and the accused was produced before the magistrate.

According to the police, the first complaint was lodged at around 12.30 p.m. by Rahul Kamaraju, stating that he was driving from Narsingi towards Kukatpally when the Mercedes allegedly rammed his car from behind at Nanakramguda. The impact caused him to lose control of the vehicle and crash into the footpath divider, damaging his vehicle. The offending car then fled towards the Outer Ring Road at Gachibowli. A traffic Home Guard alerted the control room through a wireless message about the fleeing vehicle, following which a case was booked.

In a second complaint received at about 2 p.m., traffic constable E. Narsimhulu of Gachibowli Traffic Police reported that he was on duty at the IIIT Junction when he received instructions via wireless to intercept the same vehicle involved in the Nanakramguda accident.

At around 10.50 a.m., upon spotting the car, he signalled the driver to stop. The vehicle initially slowed down but then allegedly accelerated suddenly towards the constable, causing him to fall onto the bonnet. Despite being aware that the constable was on the bonnet, the driver continued to drive in a rash manner, endangering his life, police said. The vehicle was eventually brought to a halt after other motorists intervened and blocked its path.

CCTV footage collected by the police reportedly shows the accused driving recklessly while the constable was on the bonnet. A drunk driving test conducted thereafter revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 160 mg per 100 ml, significantly above the permissible limit under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Further investigation is underway.
