The Sultan Bazar police arrested a 33-year-old driver for allegedly stealing ₹5.50 lakh cash from his employer’s car in Koti and recovered ₹5,04,900 along with two mobile phones allegedly purchased using the stolen money.

The accused, identified as Kuthadi Hari Kumar of Mahabubnagar district, was working as a driver for businessman Dayaram Prajapat.

According to the police, the theft took place on July 9 at Bank Street in Koti. While the complainant was shopping, the accused allegedly used the vehicle keys in his possession to open the car, stole a backpack containing ₹5.50 lakh in cash and fled to Kurnool.

Based on technical evidence and specific intelligence, police traced and apprehended the accused at the Shadnagar bus stand. Following his interrogation, officers recovered ₹5,04,900 in cash, two mobile phones allegedly purchased with the stolen money, another mobile phone belonging to the accused and the key to the complainant’s Scorpio vehicle.

Police said the accused allegedly committed the theft because he bore a grudge against his employer over financial difficulties and what he perceived to be inadequate pay. A case was registered under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Police said Hari Kumar is a previous offender. He was earlier convicted in a murder case registered in 2015 and was initially sentenced to life imprisonment before the sentence was modified by the High Court to two years’ rigorous imprisonment. He was also booked in 2024 for allegedly escaping from judicial custody while on furlough. Further investigation is underway.
