District Police Chief (Kochi City) Putta Vimaladitya on Sunday (December 28) promised a proper investigation into the incident in which a civil police officer (CPO) and a bike rider were injured in an accident during night patrol in the early hours of December 26.

The officer made the statement even as the police were facing allegations of abandoning the injured youth on the road while rushing the police officer, who became unconscious, to the hospital.

CPO Bijumon of the Kannamaly police station and Padinjareveli Anil, who was riding the bike, were injured in the accident at Chellanam. The matter came to light after Mr. Anil’s friend Rahul Sabu, who was riding pillion, alleged that the accident occurred as Mr. Bijumon tried to pull them down from the moving bike while they were slowing down the vehicle.

It was also alleged that Mr. Bijumon refused to take Mr. Anil to the hospital. The police denied the allegation and issued a statement, saying that the riders, under the influence of alcohol, had hit the CPO when the police signalled them to stop the speeding vehicle. The statement said the youth refused to go to the hospital along with the police.

The police on Sunday released CCTV footage in support of their claims. Though it was reported that Mr. Sabu took his friend to hospital on the damaged bike after tying him to his body to prevent him from falling down, it is not shown in the CCTV footage from the Rural Health Training Centre at Chettikadu in Alappuzha where the youth sought treatment first.

The police also released the accident register from the hospital in which the youth cited ‘the fall from the two-wheeler while avoiding collision with a stray dog’ as the reason for Mr. Anil’s injury. The record also cited ‘smell of alcohol’ from the patient. The youth have been booked for causing grievous hurt to a public servant on duty and disobeying lawful directions.

Mr. Vimaladitya said an investigation was on into the charges against the youth, while a complaint lodged by the riders with the Alappuzha District Police Chief against the personnel of the Kannamaly station had been forwarded to him. “Proper investigation will be conducted into their allegations too,” he said.
