The Dedicated Backward Classes (BC) Commission, has reportedly suggested 34% reservations to Backward Classes (BC) in Urban Local Bodies (ULB) of Telangana.

According to sources, out of the total 50% reservation permitted in Urban Local Bodies (ULB), reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) are likely to be confined to around 15% combined, while the remaining share has been allocated to Backward Classes.

The Commission justified the reduced SC and ST quota in urban areas by citing comparatively lower population proportions in towns and cities when compared to rural regions. In this context, it finalised approximately 15% reservations for SCs and STs together in municipalities.

The report submitted recently details ward-wise and chairperson-wise reservations for municipalities, with a major emphasis on BC representation.

Officials said that based on the Commission’s findings, reservations for individual Municipalities and Municipal Corporations could be finalised within one or two days.

Subsequently, the Municipal Administration Department is expected to forward the final report to the State Election Commission for further action.

Meanwhile, the State Election Commission (SEC) published the final voters’ list for the elections to be held in 117 municipalities and six municipal corporations across the State.

As per the SEC, there are a total of 52,42,993 voters, including 25,62,358 male voters, 26,80,005 female voters, and 630 voters in the ‘others’ category.

With the submission of the BC Dedicated Commission’s report and the publication of the final electoral rolls, the groundwork for the conduct of Municipal elections appears to be complete. The State Election Commission is expected to announce the election schedule shortly
