Davangere University to introduce skill-based programmes from current academic year

With an aim to enhance the skills of the students, Davangere University plans to introduce various postgraduate diploma and certificate courses alongside undergraduate and postgraduate programmes from the current academic year.

Addressing reporters in Davangere on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor B.E. Rangaswamy said that the focus was on skill-based education. “Emphasis is being placed on multidisciplinary education, with the objective of offering vocational, skill-oriented, and employment-generating degree programmes,” he said.

Mr. Rangaswamy said that these courses were aimed at equipping students with specialised knowledge in their chosen fields and prepare them for employment or self-employment.

“We already have introduced Postgraduate Diploma in Cyber Security, financial services, data analysis, food processing, safety and quality management and diploma and certificate courses in Yoga. In addition, the university is preparing to launch skill-based practical education through certificate and PG Diploma courses across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the faculties of commerce, science, social sciences, and education from the current academic year,” he said.

Emphasising that the focus was on producing entrepreneurs rather than job seekers, Mr. Rangaswamy said that students should develop the ability to create employment opportunities for others. “The university has already entered into collaborations with several national and international organisations and companies in this regard,” he said.

Elaborating on the importance given to research, the Vice-Chancellor said that the university had signed agreements on research collaboration with multiple institutions and would continue utilising all available resources to further strengthen the research ecosystem and elevate the institution to higher standards.

Deadline extended

Mr. Rangaswamy also announced that the deadline for submitting applications for admission to postgraduate courses for the current academic year had been extended from July 31 to August 10.

The decision has been taken in the wake of requests from scores of students and college principals. Admissions are open for MA, MCom, MSc, MEd, MFA, MSW, and MCA programmes.

Replying to a query, Mr. Rangaswamy said that the university currently had 129 full-time experienced faculty members, well-equipped laboratories, digital library facilities, student hostels, and career guidance services. Also, 30 postgraduate programmes are offered on the Shivagangotri campus in Davangere and the Postgraduate Centre at Guddada Rangavvanahalli in Chitradurga district.

Finance officer R. Shashidhar, dean of social sciences M.U. Lokesh, dean of commerce and business administration K.T. Srinivasa, principal of the College of Visual Arts Satish Vallepure and head of the Department of Journalism Shivakumar Kanasogi were present.
