At the time of beginning of the landfall process near the A.P. coast, the windspeed of the Severe Cyclonic Storm touched 90 kmph near Machilipatnam, as per information from authorities at the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD, in a bulletin, said the cyclonic storm is positioned about 20 km west-northwest of Narsapur, 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam, 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada, 230 km southwest of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha. The rear sector of the cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ entered into the land, the IMD stated.

The storm is likely to move northwestwards across coastal Andhra Pradesh and maintain its intensity of cyclonic storm during next 6 hours and weaken further into a deep depression during subsequent 6 hours, the IMD bulletin of 7 a.m. said.

An orange alert has been issued for the districts as very heavy rainfall is expected at one or two places in the districts of Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Anakapalli, Eluru, NTR, Krishna, Guntur, Palnadu, Bapatla and Nandyaldistricts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

INCOIS has issued a red alert for the districts of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, East Godavari and Krishna as high waves, anywhere in the range of 2.9 to 5.2 metres, are likely along the Bay of Bengal coasts in these districts. The institute has given an advisory that nearshore activities be suspended as wave surges and erosion are possible.
