Cyclone Ditwah: Heavy rains to continue in Chennai, neighbouring districts; deep depression to weaken on December 2 night

Heavy rainfall battered several parts of Chennai and Tiruvallur districts on Tuesday (December 2, 2025) in intermittent spells. The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted that spells of moderate to intense rainfall is most likely to continue over Chennai and neighbouring districts till Tuesday afternoon (December 2).

The deep depression, which is a remnant of cyclone Ditwah, recurved south-westwards slowly with a speed of 3 kmph and weakened into a depression. It lies over the west-central Bay of Bengal, north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, about 40 km east-southeast of Chennai. The minimum distance of the Centre of the depression from north T.N.-Puducherry coasts is about 25 km.

It is very likely to continue to move south-westwards towards the north T.N.-Puducherry coasts slowly and maintain its intensity as a depression till 5.30 p.m. today. Thereafter, while moving towards the coast, it is very likely to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area by Tuesday midnight (December 2).

During the past 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday (December 2), several places, particularly north Chennai, in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts received a heavy downpour. Ennore received an extremely heavy rainfall of 26 cm. Places, including Parrys (25 cm), Ice House (22 cm), Manali New Town and Ponneri (21 cm each), Basin Bridge, Chennai Collector Office and Perambur (20 cm each) and Chennai, Manali and Red Hills (19 cm each) received very heavy rainfall. Various other weather stations in Chennai and Tiruvallur recorded heavy rains.

As the weather system is weakening gradually and is positioned close to the north T.N. coast, the RMC has issued a yellow alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts, indicating isolated heavy rains on Tuesday (December 2).

In its nowcast valid till 1 p.m. on Tuesday (December 2), the RMC has light to moderate rains may occur in Ranipet, Tirupattur, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts and Puducherry, Karaikal area.
