The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has ordered a thorough investigation into allegations that a schoolteacher sexually abused his students after giving them liquor at Malampuzha.

The police arrested the teacher after he allegedly abused a Class VI student at his quarters, reportedly after giving the child liquor. The incident came to light when the student confided in another student, whose parents alerted the authorities. The school management is alleged to have attempted to suppress the matter when it was first reported.

Seven students testify

Seven students have testified against the teacher. Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairperson M. Sethumadhavan said here on Saturday that the panel would examine whether other students had undergone similar experiences. He added that counselling would be provided to students at the school.

The CWC has directed the police to treat the complaint against the teacher with utmost seriousness. During the investigation, the police reportedly recovered photographs and videos of abuse from the teacher’s smartphone and suspect that he had abused several students by taking them to his quarters.

Mr. Sethumadhavan said the full-time services of CWC counsellors would be made available at the school and that special protection would be extended to the students who have testified against the teacher.
