The CPI(M) Thrissur district secretariat in Kerala has sharply criticised Union Minister and Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi, terming his two-year tenure a “total failure.”

The party alleged that Mr. Gopi has done “nothing” for the people of the constituency despite making “grand promises” during the Lok Sabha election campaign. “He had claimed that he could get anything done with support from various departments. None of those promises have materialised,” the CPI(M) said in a statement.

According to the party, no major projects have been brought to the constituency. “Thrissur has both coastal and hilly regions. Not a single new Central project has been announced for these areas. There has not even been an attempt to understand their issues,” it said.

‘Inaccessible to ordinary people’

The CPI(M) also accused the MP of being “inaccessible” to ordinary people. “His public outreach has been a complete failure. There is arrogance and authority in both his words and actions,” it said.

Referring to the widely discussed ‘Kalungu Samvadam’ with an elderly man, Thayattu Kochu Velayudhan of Cherpu, the party said the MP’s approach was “arrogant” and humiliating. “It was the Left that stood by the aggrieved man,” it added.

The party further challenged the NDA candidates in the district to explain what the MP has delivered for the people. “Money power and the backing of authority will not help the BJP mislead voters anymore,” it said.

The CPI(M) said Mr. Gopi’s performance as MP will also come under public scrutiny in the Assembly elections.

Earlier in the day, the Kerala High Court dealt a setback to Mr. Suresh Gopi, ruling that the petition seeking cancellation of his Lok Sabha membership will be maintained.

Dismissing his interlocutory plea to quash the election petition, the court held that the challenge to his election could not be rejected at this stage and that he must face trial.

The petition was filed by the Thrissur district president of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF).
