The CPI(M) staged a protest on Sunday (June 28, 2026) against the inauguration of a rafting event, organised as part of a kayaking competition, near the site where search operations were under way for a person who went missing after being swept away in the swollen Pathankayam river near Kodenchery in Kozhikode.

Earlier, two persons were rescued while another went missing after an unexpected swell in the river on Saturday (June 27, 2026). The rafting event was inaugurated by Kozhikode district panchayat president Mili Mohan. The CPI(M) workers held a protest march at Kodenchery town.

The party alleged that inaugurating the rafting event in a celebratory manner while an intensive search was continuing for the missing person nearby was inhuman and shocking. The CPI(M) said such an approach was unbecoming of those holding positions of responsibility.

The party has decided to organise a mass protest march to the Kodenchery grama panchayat office on Monday (June 29, 2026) at 10 a.m. in protest against the incident.
