The Ernakulam district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] was reconstituted by electing five invitees at the conclusion of its extended meeting here on Thursday (October 1, 2026).

The invitees included Nikhil Babu, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) district secretary; Bibin Varghese, DYFI district president; M.B. Shiny, Mahila Association district secretary; Beena Baburaj, Mahila Association district unit president; and P.H.M. Ismail, former NGO Union State leader.

K.P. Rejish, Angamaly area secretary, was inducted into the district committee. P.A. Peter, senior district leader, was inducted into the lone vacancy in the district secretariat, said S. Sathish, Ernakulam district secretary of the CPI(M).

The extended district committee meeting, held to review the setbacks faced by the party in the 2026 Assembly elections, called for strengthening the party machinery in Ernakulam by identifying shortcomings. Mr. Sathish said the party would step up its operations in the coastal and agricultural sectors of the district by addressing issues faced by fisherfolk and farmers.

He said the CPI(M) is with the residents of P&T Apartment Complex, who are on an indefinite agitation against their alleged deplorable living conditions. The government has to take the required measures to resolve their problems and initiate an inquiry into the alleged structural deficiencies in the complex, he added.

As many as 129 delegates attended the two-day meeting. A detailed organisational report explaining the party’s weaknesses and challenges was discussed at the meeting.
