Communist Party of India (CPI) national secretariat member K. Prakash Babu has said that any attempt to alter the basic character of the land reforms implemented by the Keralam government led by C. Achutha Menon, which brought about revolutionary changes in the State’s political and social landscape, will be opposed and defeated with all might.

He was speaking at a national seminar at the Achutha Menon Foundation on the State’s development history and the perspective for future.

He said if the V.D. Satheesan-led United Democratic Front government, which talks about a second round of land reforms, seeks to subvert land reforms and concentrate wealth in the hands of a few in the name of industrial needs, in the manner in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Gujarat evacuated two villages in that State, it will not be allowed.

But the CPI welcomes amending the existing land ceiling for distribution of land to the landless poor, he said.

Eminent social scientist K.P. Kannan said what Keralam‘s development needs is a new political culture which gives prominence to gender justice, social justice and democratic values.
