CPI targets Modi government at Delhi rally, calls for ‘change’

The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Tuesday (September 1, 2026) accused the Centre of pursuing pro-corporate policies and sought to intensify its political agitation against the Narendra Modi government.

The party held a public meeting at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan at the conclusion of its nationwide padyatras, organised from August 6 to 15 against the government, under the slogan “Badlaav zaroori hai” (change is essential).

Addressing the rally, CPI general secretary D. Raja accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of running a “fascist regime”. “Poor people across the country are being deprived of their fundamental rights. The government is corporatising public sector undertakings. The education system has been demolished,” Mr. Raja said.

He said the government’s policies, including the dilution of the rural employment guarantee programme and the commercialisation of education and healthcare, were aimed at benefiting a few “crony capitalists”, while ordinary citizens faced mounting economic and social pressures.

Mr. Raja said India was witnessing an “alarming deterioration” in its social, political and economic conditions. “People need jobs, MSP, social security, dignity, justice and democracy, not propaganda, hatred and division,” he said. 

Drawing a parallel with the Indian freedom struggle against British rule, Mr. Raja said the country must come together to “defeat the RSS-BJP Raj of division, inequality and authoritarianism”.

CPI national secretary Amarjeet Kaur said the BJP and the RSS had always singled out Left parties as their primary political opponents.

“Should we forget the fact that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a meeting of the BJP’s top leadership three years ago, termed the communists dangerous and said that the communists must be finished? Today, we have come to tell you that we will finish you,” she said.
