A cow from Anekal participating in the Dasara cow milking competition held at J.K. Grounds in Mysuru yielded a total of 38.15 litres of milk on Saturday, leading its owner Ajay to bag the first prize of ₹1,00,000.

The winning cow yielded 21.5 litres in the morning and another 16.65 litres in the evening, taking the total quantity of milk yielded in a day to 38.15 litres

A total of 15 cows from different districts of Karnataka participated in the State-level cow milking competition organised by the Farmers’ Dasara Sub Committee and Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences.

The cow belonging to Sanjeev from Chittenahalli village in Periyapatna taluk of Mysuru district yielded a total of 37.15 litres, facilitating its owner to bag the second prize, which carried a cash prize of ₹80,000. The cow yielded 20.15 litres in the morning and 17 litres in the evening.

The cow owned by Harshit Gowda, a resident of Benchakalpalya in Nagarbhavi in Bengaluru came a close third after it yielded 19 litres in the morning and 18.10 litres in the evening, totalling 37.10 litres. The cash prize for third position was ₹60,000.

Nishanth Shivaramu’s cow from Ganjam in Srirangapatna came fourth, yielding 36.85 litres including 17.80 litres in the morning and 19.05 litres in the evening. The fourth prize fetched its owner a cash prize of ₹40,000.

Minister for Animal Husbandry K. Venkatesh distributed the prizes to the owners of the cows that yielded the highest quantity of milk during the competition. The owners of all other cows that participated in the competition will also be encouraged with a consolation prize of ₹ 10,000 and a memento.

The Cow Milking Competition attracted a large number of curious visitors to J.K. Grounds, who not only watched the competition eagerly, but also sought information on cattle rearing, their feeding and the care they needed from the cow owners.

Deputy Director of Department of Animal Husbandry, Mysuru, Nagaraju said the number of people thronging the venue of the cow milking competition was itself proof about the interest in dairying among young farmers. He called upon the dairy farmers to make use of the government schemes available in the sector.
