A Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Taliparamba has acquitted all 28 accused in the case relating to the ‘Vayalkili’ agitation against the National Highway project at Keezhattoor in which protesters were charged with obstructing government officials engaged in land acquisition.

Judicial First Class Magistrate Sreeja on Monday (June 29) pronounced the judgment acquitting all 28 accused, including Suresh Keezhattoor, in connection with the incident that occurred on March 14, 2018. The case was registered after Revenue officials who had arrived to measure land for the National Highway project were allegedly prevented from carrying out their duties.

According to the prosecution, protesters threatened self-immolation to stop the land survey, with the agitators reportedly carrying bottles containing petrol during the protest.

The standoff lasted for several hours before the police arrested 49 protesters, bringing the situation under control.
