The Kerala government has decided to try its luck in the production of premium brandy. As part of it, the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco) on Tuesday invited entries suggesting ‘name’ and ‘logo’ for the newly proposed Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL).

According to a statement released by BEVCO, individuals who suggest a suitable ‘name’ and ‘logo’ for the brandy will receive a cash prize of ₹10,000 each at the time of the brand’s launch. The public can submit their suggestions on malabardistilleries@gmail.com by January 7. The brandy will be manufactured by the Malabar Distilleries Ltd. at Menonpara in Palakkad.

The State is perhaps trying to repeat the success achieved by launching Jawan rum, now a trusted name in Kerala’s IMFL business.

Rum enjoys hardly less than 30% market share in Kerala, where brandy and beer account for the lion’s share. The market share of premium brands is less than 5%, which the State now plans to bridge or increase with its own brand. Hardly 20% of the liquor sold in the State is manufactured in Kerala, with the rest of the products sourced from other States.
