The State government is conspiring to weaken the country’s lone Urdu university established in Hyderabad by the Centre – Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) — by planning to take back 50 acres of land for the real estate needs.

Speaking after meeting a delegation of university students at his residence here on Friday, he said they were strongly opposing the government plans to resume the land illegally and to monetise it for the real estate sector.

He alleged that the Congress government was acting like a serial killer in snatching the land allotted to higher educational institutions starting with taking back land of Prof. Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University in the name of new buildings for the High Court. Later, it attempted to monetise 400 acres of land given to University of Hyderabad.

However, large-scale protests by the UoH students and intervention of the Supreme Court had put brakes on the government plans, at least for the time being. Despite the Supreme Court suggestion for instituting a probe into the UoH land sale deal, the State government had not taken up any inquiry so far. A scam of ₹10,000 crore was planned in the UoH land deal, he alleged.

Mr. Rama Rao felt that the State government could not have eyed the MANUU land now had the Centre acted tough in the matter of UoH land issue. By taking back the land allotted to universities, the State government was acting like a real estate broker. He noted that UoH had parted with about 32 acres land for the Outer Ring Road in the past and another 7 acres was taken for the Khajaguda-Nanakramguda link road.
