The Telangana government, by an order on Thursday, has approved continuation of the Telangana Comprehensive Integrated Township Policy for a further period of five years.

The policy was announced and rules were framed in November 2020 by the then BRS (then TRS) government towards sustainable and transit oriented development.

It envisages the development of self-contained townships beyond the Outer Ring Road, combining workplaces, housing, commercial establishments and institutional facilities with supporting infrastructure under the ‘Walk to Work’ concept.

The policy emphasises integrated urban planning, with adequate housing, employment opportunities, educational and healthcare facilities, public utilities and public transport within townships. It stresses on the provision of parks and open spaces, eco-friendly building practices, energy conservation, scientific waste and storm water management.

The policy seeks to promote inclusive housing by providing for economically weaker sections and low-income groups. It also mandates mechanisms for the maintenance and upkeep of townships through residents’ and users’ associations.

To encourage private investment in township development, the government has offered developers concessions, including partial or complete waivers of development fees and property tax.
