The Andhra Pradesh Tenant Farmers’ Association (APTFA) has urged the State government to ensure that the recently announced financial aid for onion cultivation reaches tenant farmers.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, association president A. Katamayya and general secretary P. Jamalayya welcomed the government’s decision to provide financial support of ₹50,000 per hectare to onion faqrmers.
However, they pointed out that a majority of those cultivating onions are tenant farmers, many of whom have not been issued tenant recognition cards due to restrictive provisions in the Andhra Pradesh Crop Cultivators Rights Act.
They requested the government to identify tenant farmers who have cultivated onions, issue them cultivation certificates, and extend the announced financial support directly to them.
Highlighting the economic burden on tenant farmers, the leaders said that cultivating one acre of onions costs nearly ₹1.5 lakh, including over ₹20,000 paid as rent. With falling market prices, tenant farmers are suffering heavy losses. To prevent further distress, they urged the government to purchase onions at ₹3,000 per quintal to safeguard tenant farmers’ livelihoods.
