The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has strongly criticised the Andhra Pradesh government for inviting bids from private players to expand Ramayapatnam Port in Prakasam district under a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model. The deep sea, greenfield port is being constructed by the state government at an estimated cost of ₹4,929.39 crore.
The CITU leaders along with like-minded organisations have conducted a round-table meeting in Ongole on Tuesday. They have prepared an action plan against the proposed privatisation of Ramayapatnam port. As the state government has called for tenders by October 5, 2026, they have passed a resolution to stage a protest at Collectorate in Ongole on September 30, 2026.
Speaking to The Hindu, CITU state general secretary Ch. Narasing Rao said, “Ramayapatnam Port can handle 34.04 million tonnes of cargo a year with four berths. It can be further expanded to 19 berths. Once it is operational, it will change the overall outlook of Prakasam district.”
“Such a crucial port is being privatised by the government,” he alleged.
The CITU leader further said, “The government has acquired 850 acres for the port in first phase, and it is in the process of acquiring 2,924 acres in the second phase. The land taken from 4,000 households will go to the hands of private investors.”
“Already, 80.55% of the port construction was completed so far. At a time when it can generate revenues, why the government is trying to privatise it? Who will be benefitted with this move,” he questioned.
