Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that a major conspiracy was hatched against Zubeen Garg and indicated his death was connected to financial transactions.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the unnatural death of Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg will submit the charge sheet in a local court on December 12, Special Director General of Police (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta said.
Garg died while swimming in the sea off an island in Singapore on September 19. Seven people, including his manager Siddharth Sharma and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, were arrested in connection with his death.
“We have almost completed the probe after having recorded the statements of more than 300 people. We will file the charge sheet of the case on December 12,” Mr. Gupta told journalists in Guwahati on Saturday (December 6, 2025).
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the SIT was in the process of submitting the charge sheet. “The SIT told me that there are 3,000 to 3,500 documents that need to be signed and photocopied. We also discussed (the submission of the charge sheet) with the Advocate General,” he said.
On November 25, he told the 126-member State Assembly that one person had murdered Garg and the others cooperated. He asserted that it was a case of “plain and simple murder.”
“They [opposition parties] attacked me, asking how I could conclude Zubeen was murdered. It is in the court’s record that this was murder. We have booked four to five persons on murder charge,” the Chief Minister said.
Without sharing details, he alleged that a major conspiracy was hatched against Garg before the COVID-19 pandemic and indicated his death was connected to financial transactions.
“We have the evidence. That’s why I told the SIT to file the charge sheet on the murder case first and then expand the inquiry so that nobody can escape,” he said.
Garg was not in the best of health when he travelled to Singapore to perform at the 4th North East India Festival, which Mr. Mahanta had organised.
The others arrested in connection with Garg’s death are his cousin Sandipan Garg, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and singer Amritprabha Mahanta. They are all in judicial custody.
