Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy flagged the alleged irregularities and unethical practices in Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) and requested Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to order an inquiry to ascertain facts and to see whether there are adequate safeguards to protect the company’s interests.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, he highlighted reports of the alleged disappearance of 40 lakh tonnes of coal valued at ₹1,600 crore, resulting in a significant financial loss to the company. The Union Minister said that given the SCCL’s current financial position, with dues exceeding ₹51,500 crore from the State government, the allegations could further hamper the company’s financial stability.

“If not addressed promptly, the allegations may undermine the SCCL’s financial position and impede its future growth and sustainability, Mr. Kishan Reddy said and urged the Chief Minister to ascertain the facts through an inquiry, which would also help in checking the safeguards, mechanisms and internal controls for the effective functioning of SCCL.

While undertaking such an assessment, it would also be prudent to consider periodic reviews using technology-based monitoring tools to identify weaknesses at an early stage and address them promptly.
