The Centre may roll out a fresh electric bus scheme for States after completing the tendering and allocation of all 14,000 buses under the PM E-DRIVE programme, a government official said.
Under the ₹10,900 crore PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme, nearly half the outlay—₹4,391 crore—has been earmarked for the procurement of 14,028 electric buses.
“The Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) has successfully tendered all 14,000 buses and allocated them (to States). States will receive them in the next 2–3 years. This is a huge push for electrification of public transportation,” the official said, adding that “we will ask States if they want more buses, and then we may think of providing more buses by either extending the current scheme or launching a new one.”
