The students’ union at the University of Calicut (CU) has proposed to conduct zonal-level arts festivals in January and February, and the inter-zone arts festival in March.

The arts festivals in colleges affiliated to the university are conducted under ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ and ‘F’ zones representing Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur and Wayanad districts.

According to sources, students’ union chairperson P.K. Shifana has suggested a tentative schedule in a letter to Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran. While the ‘A’ zone and ‘C’ zone festivals could be held between January 15 and 21, the ‘B’ zone festival between January 7 and 14, the ‘D’ zone festival between February 5 and 9, and the ‘F’ zone festival between February 7 and 14. The inter-zone festival could be held between March 26 and 30.

The students’ union has also sought the fixing of examination dates without affecting the festival schedule, early release of funds, and a consent letter from colleges that are willing to host the events.

The letter from the union chairperson demanded that university-level monitoring committees involving the departments of examinations, finance, and students’ welfare should be set up to oversee the conduct of the festivals. The participation in the festivals should be recognised as an academic co-curricular activity, the letter added.

Meanwhile, university sources told The Hindu on Sunday (December 28) that the V-C was expected to fix the final schedule for the festivals within a week.
