A five-year-old girl narrowly escaped a road accident at Kodiyathur in Kozhikode district on Monday (February 2), following the timely intervention of a private bus driver. The incident occurred around 11 a.m.

According to local traders who witnessed the incident, the child suddenly ran across the road after alighting from an autorickshaw, while her parents were unaware of her sudden movement.

Shinoj, the bus driver, noticed the child entering the road and immediately swerved the vehicle towards the extreme right. As there were no vehicles approaching from the opposite direction, the manoeuvre prevented a possible accident, a local trader said.

Visuals of the narrow escape were widely shared on social media, drawing appreciation for the driver’s prompt response. He was later honoured with a ponnada by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions workers at Kodiyathur.

The police sources said the child belongs to a family from West Bengal that had recently arrived in the district in search of work.
