The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Monday (July 6, 2026) appointed 1993-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officers Alok Mittal and Amit Garg as the chiefs of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Both the BPR&D and the NCRB, which come under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, played a key role in the implementation of the new criminal laws in the country and are responsible for the modernisation of the police force and major policy reforms.

Sujeet Pandey, a 1994-batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre has been appointed Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), the order said.

Mr. Mittal, who is at present posted as Director General, Prisons, Haryana had earlier served in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and has worked extensively on cases pertaining to the Islamic State. Under his supervision, several IS modules were busted by the NIA from 2017-2020.

The ACC order said that he will serve as Director General, BPR&D from the date of joining of the post and up to June 30, 2029, which is the date of his superannuation or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Mr. Garg who is from Andhra Pradesh is at present working as Director, SVPNPA. He has been appointed head of the NCRB by temporary upgradation of the post to that of Director General level, from the date of joining the post till the date of his superannuation (October 31, 2027) or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
