HYDERABAD

Lack of local reservation was resulting in grave injustice for Telangana students in Medical PG admissions, senior leader of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and former Minister for Health T. Harish Rao said and demanded that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy take necessary steps to ensure justice to the students.

In an open letter addressed to the Chief Minister on Sunday, Mr. Rao said the indifference by the State government had left the Telangana students seeking admission into the Medical PG courses, particularly in the management quota seats, in the lurch.

He stated that there were 1,801 Medical PG seats in Telangana with 50% of them going under the all-India quota and of the remaining 50% seats, 450 were under the management quota. However, non-implementation of the local quota in management seats was allowing students of other States to get admission at the cost of Telangana students.

In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, 85% of the management quota seats were going to the local (AP) students and the students of other States were getting only 15% seats. Telangana students would get 382 seats and only 68 would go to the non-local students if local quota is implemented.

Allowing continuation of Medical PG admissions without local quota in the management seats would make Telangana students forgo 382 seats. He stated that the BRS government had amended the admission rules to benefit Telangana students and due to which 100% seats in the medical colleges established after formation of the State on June2, 2014 were reserved for local (Telangana) students.

The BRS government decision had resulted in Telangana students get an additional 520 MBBS seats, another 1,300 B-Category seats with 85% local reservation — a total of 1,820 additional seats with the establishment of 20 new medical colleges.
